In the heart of Dunster, perfectly placed for the village’s excellent pubs, restaurants, shops and sights is The Oval, a self-catering cottage accommodating up to six people. One of the oldest properties in the village, this much-loved cottage began life as a medieval hall house in the 1300s. Today, its hand-crafted wooden screen and stunning cruck beams survive intact and fascinate many guests. In fact, if you look carefully you can see the chisel marks on the screen and original - and very rare - wooden pegs in the beams.
The Oval has been carefully converted into a welcoming, comfortable holiday cottage with all the facilities you’d expect for the 21st century. As well as a large sitting room with cosy wood burner and snug, the house boasts a well-stocked kitchen, dining room, patio and sun deck, plus three beautifully furnished bedrooms, two en-suite. A high chair and cot are provided for little ones, and the property is dog friendly as our many four-legged guests would testify. After a day out exploring Exmoor, the snug is the go-to room for toys for children of all ages, a large selection of books and DVDs to suit all tastes, and jigsaws for novice or expert.
We have two reserved parking spaces for guests of The Oval, each a short walk away from the property.
“Thank you for the welcoming tea tray – a delightful touch in such a welcoming and well-appointed house. Exceptional fabrics and textures, and everything tasteful and pleasing – we really have enjoyed staying in this house. The upper terrace is sunny and peaceful – many a cuppa and glass shared there! A really nice feature as outdoor space is so important. Good central location, and plenty to do in Dunster. A very successful holiday.”
“Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful cottage. We had everything we needed. Dunster is a lovely village and we really enjoyed our visit to the castle. All the beds were lovely, and I enjoyed the comfort of a good night’s sleep. A lovely cottage where families can spend quality time.”
The Oval is one of three self-catering properties in the Exmoor Character Cottages portfolio, and it’s extremely popular. So, if The Oval is booked when you want to visit, or you want to cater for a larger party, try Pilgrim Corner or The Old Sweet Shop on North Hill in nearby Minehead. These ‘chocolate box’ thatched cottages are located in one of the oldest, prettiest and quietest parts of the town. Dating back to the 17th century, they each have their own character and original features as well as high-quality furnishings and lovely gardens, complete with a hot tub. Perfect for all, dogs are welcome too.
The Old Sweet Shop sleeps eight in four tastefully decorated bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. The lush sitting room, complete with log burner, large kitchen/diner, pretty garden with large hot tub and on-site parking for two cars make this cottage a wonderful place to relax with friends and family.
Next door is Pilgrim Corner, a large, thatched cottage sleeping eight in four comfortable en-suite bedrooms. There’s also an impressive country kitchen, sumptuous sitting room, dining room, beautiful cottage style garden and hot tub. The lovely garden with its terraces is a real favourite with guests.
